Darkest Dungeon is a turn-based dungeon-crawling RPG where players assemble a party of four heroes from a wide variety of character classes. Each class offers unique abilities, strengths, and combat roles, encouraging players to build balanced teams capable of handling different threats.Combat takes place in side-view encounters where positioning plays a vital role. Heroes and enemies occupy different ranks, and many abilities can only be used from specific positions or target certain enemy rows. Choosing the right formation often determines the outcome of difficult battles.
One of the game’s defining mechanics is the Stress System. As heroes encounter horrifying creatures, deadly traps, and disturbing events, their stress levels steadily increase. Excessive stress can trigger negative psychological conditions such as paranoia, fear, hopelessness, or selfishness, causing characters to perform poorly during combat. In extreme cases, overwhelming stress can even lead to heart attacks, making mental health just as important as physical survival.Players must carefully manage resources during expeditions.
