Gears 5 is played from a third-person perspective and builds upon the series’ signature cover-based shooting mechanics. Players move between cover, flank enemies, and coordinate attacks while engaging in fast-paced battles against overwhelming Swarm forces.Combat revolves around a powerful arsenal of futuristic weapons. Iconic firearms such as the Lancer Assault Rifle with its chainsaw bayonet, Gnasher Shotgun, Longshot Sniper Rifle, Hammerburst, and explosive weapons return alongside several new additions. Every weapon offers a distinct playstyle, encouraging players to adapt to different combat situations.

A new companion drone named Jack plays a vital role throughout the campaign. Jack can scan the environment, hack enemy robots, deploy protective shields, revive teammates, stun enemies, and retrieve weapons or ammunition. As the story progresses, players unlock upgrades that expand Jack’s abilities, allowing for greater tactical flexibility.

Unlike previous entries, Gears 5 introduces larger semi-open environments that players can explore using the Skiff, a wind-powered vehicle. These expansive areas contain optional missions, hidden collectibles, upgrade components, and lore that enrich the game’s world beyond the main storyline.
