Set in the fictional Redview County, the game features winding mountain roads, deserts, forests, highways, coastal routes, and busy urban areas. Players can freely explore the open world while taking part in high-speed races, police pursuits, challenges, and competitive events.

The central concept of Need for Speed Rivals is the rivalry between racers and police. Players can switch between both sides, with each offering its own progression system, objectives, vehicles, and gameplay style.

Need for Speed Rivals focuses on fast arcade-style driving and intense police chases. Players can choose to play as a Racer or a Cop, creating two distinct career experiences.

As a Racer, players compete in races, time trials, pursuit challenges, and other events while trying to build reputation and earn Speed Points. The longer a racer stays active during a session, the greater the potential reward—but getting arrested causes the accumulated points to be lost.

Playing as a Cop provides a completely different experience. Police players chase illegal racers and use specialized pursuit equipment to disable them. Police vehicles can deploy technologies such as roadblocks, EMP attacks, spike strips, helicopters, and shockwave-style weapons to stop fleeing drivers.One of the game’s major features is the AllDrive system, which blends single-player and multiplayer experiences. Players can encounter other racers and police players within the same open-world environment, creating unpredictable pursuits and spontaneous competitions.

The open world allows players to move freely between events instead of being restricted to separate racing tracks. Highways are useful for reaching extreme speeds, while mountain roads and forests provide opportunities for shortcuts and evasive driving.

Vehicle damage and pursuit mechanics make high-speed chases more intense. Collisions, police attacks, and environmental obstacles can seriously damage vehicles, forcing players to manage their car carefully during prolonged pursuits.The game also features Pursuit Tech, giving both racers and police access to specialized equipment. Racers can use tools designed to escape or disrupt police, while cops receive technologies specifically designed to capture and disable racers.
