The Outlast Trials is a first-person survival horror game developed by Red Barrels. Set during the Cold War era, the game places players inside the horrifying Murkoff Corporation’s experimental program, where test subjects are forced to endure brutal psychological and physical trials.Unlike traditional Outlast games, The Outlast Trials supports cooperative multiplayer, allowing players to face terrifying experiments alone or with a team. The objective is not simply to defeat enemies but to survive, complete objectives, avoid terrifying threats, and escape the experimental facility.

The Outlast Trials is played from a first-person perspective and focuses heavily on survival, stealth, exploration, and completing objectives.Players are known as Reagents, individuals trapped inside Murkoff’s experimental program. Each Trial places them in a dangerous environment filled with enemies, traps, puzzles, and objectives that must be completed before escaping.Combat is intentionally limited compared with traditional action games. Players generally need to avoid enemies rather than fight them directly. Hiding, running, distracting enemies, and carefully planning movement are essential survival techniques.

The iconic night vision mechanic returns in a new form. Players can use specialized equipment to see through dark environments, but managing resources and remaining aware of surroundings is essential.

Trials feature objectives that require players to interact with machinery, collect items, manipulate equipment, solve problems, and complete dangerous tasks while being hunted by enemies.

The game can be played solo, but cooperative multiplayer is one of its biggest features. Teams can work together to distract enemies, revive fallen teammates, share resources, and complete objectives more efficiently.

Communication becomes extremely important during difficult trials. Players can divide responsibilities, warn teammates about enemy locations, and coordinate escape routes.

Different enemies have unique behaviors and abilities. Some patrol specific areas, while others actively search for players and react to noise or suspicious activity. Learning enemy behavior can help players survive longer.
