Tyranny is an isometric role-playing game (RPG) developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Paradox Interactive. Set in a dark fantasy world where evil has already won, Tyranny offers a unique narrative that places players in the role of a powerful Fatebinder, an elite officer serving the ruthless overlord Kyros. Instead of fighting to defeat darkness, players must decide how to enforce Kyros’ rule—or secretly shape the future according to their own ambitions.

The story begins after Kyros has conquered nearly the entire known world. Only one region, known as the Tiers, remains divided by civil war and political conflict. As a Fatebinder, you are sent to resolve disputes between powerful armies, judge the fate of nobles, and bring order to the land. Every decision influences the balance of power, affecting kingdoms, companions, and the course of the entire story.

With its mature writing, meaningful choices, memorable companions, and deep RPG mechanics, Tyranny stands out as one of the most distinctive role-playing experiences in the genre.

Tyranny is played from an isometric perspective and combines real-time combat with tactical pause mechanics. Players explore cities, ancient ruins, forests, fortresses, temples, and battlefields while completing story missions, side quests, and political investigations throughout the war-torn world.

One of the game’s defining features is its choice-driven narrative. Nearly every conversation, quest, and major decision has lasting consequences. Players can support rival factions, betray allies, spare enemies, or rule through fear and intimidation. These choices shape the storyline, unlock unique quests, and determine which companions and factions remain loyal.

Combat takes place in real time, but players can pause at any moment to issue commands, cast spells, reposition allies, and coordinate attacks. Success depends on tactical planning, party composition, and effective use of each character’s abilities rather than quick reflexes.

Players can create a custom Fatebinder and specialize in a wide range of combat styles, including swordsmanship, dual-wielding, heavy weapons, archery, magic, and defensive skills. Characters improve naturally by using their abilities, allowing progression to reflect individual playstyles.Magic is one of Tyranny’s most innovative systems. Players collect magical sigils and combine them to create customized spells with different elements, effects, and enhancements. This flexible system allows for countless spell combinations, ranging from devastating fireballs and lightning storms to protective barriers and healing magic.

Throughout the adventure, players recruit unique companions, each with their own personalities, loyalties, and combat specialties. Building relationships with companions unlocks new dialogue, powerful combo abilities, and additional story content.
